Drawing from the very best of Hugh Nibley, this collection of excerpts feels more like a guided tour through a brilliant mind than a quote book. Arranged thematically, it covers the highlights of Nibley's best thinking and writing on everything from the Creation, through ancient people, times, and documents, to modern-day prophets and righteous living today. Two features give great insight into the man and his life's work: a very personal life sketch about Hugh Nibley written by his grandson, and an introduction about Nibley's contribution to LDS literature and scholarship, his unique dynamic within the Church, and his abiding testimony. With highlights drawn from nearly 10,000 pages of the Collected Works of Hugh Nibley, The Essential Nibley shows how Nibley continues to give thinkers something to believe in and believers something to think about, even today.
Hugh Nibley (1910-2005) was a Latter-Day Saint scholar who taught for many years at Brigham Young University. His written works comprise 18 volumes. He could speak 16 languages, and he could read several other ancient languages. This book is a sort of "greatest hits." Some of Nibley's most important and illuminating points are collected in this one volume. An example--Joseph Smith claimed that an angel gave him gold plates containing a record of people written in an ancient hieroglyphic. The angel also gave Smith the power to translate the plates. This is how the Book of Mormon came to be. Many people are skeptical of Smith's tale. Nibley shows how since Smith's time (1805-1844) other ancient writings have been found on both gold and silver plates. It was a fairly common thing to do. Joseph Smith claimed he received revelations from God, and he wrote these down in a book called Doctrine and Covenants. This book is accepted as scripture by the LDS Church today. Nibley shows how more recent findings, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, not only confirm much that is in the Book of Mormon, but also confirm many of Smith's revelations, some of them being almost word for word what Smith had stated--but they were found 100 years after Smith's death. There is much more here, and it is rich. What this little volume has done is strengthen my own testimony that Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God, and that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, just as is the Bible.Mr. Nibley was a humble man. He did not like the scholar label. But his scholarship has been of great benefit to millions who have read his work.
