Product Description

Essential Biochemistry, 3rd Edition is comprised of biology, pre-med and allied health topics and presents a broad, but not overwhelming, base of biochemical coverage that focuses on the chemistry behind the biology. Furthermore, it relates the chemical concepts that scaffold the biology of biochemistry, providing practical knowledge as well as many problem-solving opportunities to hone skills. Key Concepts and Concept Review features help students to identify and review important takeaways in each section.

Pratt and Cornely have done the almost impossible. They have put together an informative biochemistry textbook that is very well designed and will not overwhelm students in a 1 semester course. The boxed Biochemistry Notes, Problems and Answers, and Clinical Connections are definite pluses, as well as the well thought out end-of-chapter question sets.Addendum: I hope the authors will update the section on pentose phosphate pathway with better illustrations in future editions . The Lego-block style figure (Fig. 13-11) is not informative, and does not present the biochemical choreography within the pathway in inter-converting between C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7. I had to substitute figures from Stryer's, for explaining that section to my students.I wish the publisher would make the book-related online material available to all those who have purchased a copy of the book. Content on the WileyPlus site is available only to instructors and students registered for a course. Those who bought the book for self-study are out-of-luck. That is unfortunate, because this is an excellent text for self-study.
