Once you've learned the basics from Saussure, Peirce, and Barthes, Halliday is the next logical step in understanding all things semiotic. My interests are focused on analyzing the visual elements within texts making this a must read. Halliday is the cornerstone of work in this area done by van Leeuwen, Kress, and Hodge.
