Barney WILEN was the most gifted of all the French saxophone players. He always played with very good piano players: in this album, he plays with two of them, Alain JEAN-MARIE (acoustic piano) and Laurent DE WILDE (electric piano or synthesizer), the other performers are Michel ZENINO (bass) and Jean-Pierre ARNAUD. He recorded three albums for the Japanese ALFA Jazz label: this one is the best of all and one of my best jazz albums. Recorded in November 1992, Barney plays here 11 tunes (mostly standards) either with tenor or alto saxophones : all the pieces (see my scan of the CD’s recto face) are magnificently well-done.
