Amazon.com A veteran of the British dance-music scene, DJ Pete Tong proves with his first major-label mix release in the U.S. that experience means everything when it comes to calibrating the mood of the dance floor. Using a genuine dance lover's sense of pace and mood, Tong has constructed a mix that brings to mind Buenos Aires at 3 a.m., New York City at 3:30, or maybe just your own favorite living room dance space. Because quite simply, the likes of Trisco, Way Out West (a project of DJ Nick Warren's), and Blaze will not allow you to sit still. It seems churlish to pick out peaks in a veritable mountain range of late-night classics, but perhaps only Tong could find the superb David Morales remix of Photek's "Mine to Give." Sister Bliss, featuring John Martyn's "Deliver Me" (Mix One-12" Mix), offers altitude, raw sex, and dirty dance-floor moves, while the freeway-burning "Futureshock" by Sparc happily pushes physical and mental accelerators to their limits. With Essential, Pete Tong has created a steamy, sensual, disco-fused house mix that doesn't deny the vitality of trance. --Steffan Chirazi Review If you're Pete Tong, you've got the ears of the Londong club-going public in your hands. The BBC Radio 1 DJ (with duties on his own label, FFRR) became a revered household name for honing in on quality electronic talent after joining the station nine years ago. Tong's weekly "Essential Selection" became so reputable that it has since spawned a heady number of compilations, mixes and even tours.Tong's eclectic tastes run the musical gamut in his installment of the Essential Mix mix CD series. The 15-track album gently kicks off with Rui Da Silva's sexy "Touch Me," an easy ride that trembles with weight at the right moments. A power-punch of beats quickly sets off "Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna) (DJ Lottie Remix)" by M&S Presents The Girl Next Door, while the grooves of Planet Funk's "Chase the Sunsystem F-Needle Juice" provide background for a sappy, melodic tune layered with vocals strangely reminiscent of shoegazer band Lush. No particularly standout tracks here, but Photek's "Mine to Give (David Morales Facedown Mix)" is nice to see among this collection. Essential Mix might contain only a few truly essential tracks, but they're enough to keep this on your shelf as an antidote for when the skies turn gray.Phuong-Cac Nguyen -- From URB Magazine
When I originally bought this album many years ago it included a code to download a 30 minute Pete Tong mix. Why can't I find any reference to it anymore? Don't tell me it just doesn't exist. It went hand in hand with this album. The two complimented each other perfectly.
